... with this title, the European Commission awarded the city of Essen for its demonstrably high environmental standards and their targeted follow-up. Following the successes and momentum of this award in 2017, our city has positioned itself for the future and established the 'Green Capital Agency':
As a staff unit of the Department for Environment, Transport and Sport of the City of Essen, it coordinates the future topics of climate protection, energy, sustainability, mobility and urban development in the City of Essen Group in order to consistently pursue the goals of the Green Capital together with the entire Essen urban society.
Successful structures and a good programme
Climate protection is a joint task. Against this backdrop, the Green Capital Agency motivates and networks active people in Essen. It is the central point of contact for the diverse energy and climate activities in Essen. The Green Capital Agency provides information and creates spaces for the co-creative development of strategies and projects for climate protection and sustainability. In this way, impulses are given for the cooperation of initiatives, associations, companies and administration and added value is created for a dynamisation of climate protection at all levels.
The application for the European Green Capital was conceived from the beginning as a building block of an ongoing environmental management process, and the achievement of the twelve sustainability goals - even after the successful programme of the title year - is of great importance for the future viability and sustainable development of our city in the Green Decade.
