The traditional carillon glockenspiel chimes are located at the top of the bell tower of what used to be the Deiterhaus, now Pletzsch jewellers, on the Kettwiger Strasse - the main shopping street in Essen - and have been there since 1928. To the melody of traditional folk songs, 12 little doors open, arranged in four levels below the dial, and a number of figures from Essen’s history emerge. In winter the carillon plays carols instead of the traditional songs.
