Hestertalbahn (Hespertal Railway)

If you are looking for a standard gauge railway with steam engines from the ‘romantic’ age of rail, the Hespertalbahn in Essen is what you are looking for. Pulled by steam locomotives, the historic trains run from the old station at Kupferdreh along the banks of Lake Baldeney to the castle ruins at Haus Scheppen. This last relic of heavy industry in the entire region travels at 15 km/h along a 4.6 kilometer stretch through a bucolic renaturalized landscape.
