In March 2016 the Galerie Cinema, also known as the little cinema with the very special charme, celebrated its 45th birthday. With 45 seats it is not only the tiniest but also the oldest arthouse cinema in the Ruhr area, and is treasured by many patrons for its cosy atmosphere. Situated in the semi-basement of a residential house the cinematic experience here starts with the step through the entrance door for it leads directly into the theatre.

Today the programme of the Galerie Cinema contains mainly smaller first-runs of current films and impresses with its originality. Whilst many smaller productions are threatened to drown in the surplus of films and media today the Galerie Cinema takes its time to offer them a worthy room with a unique atmosphere.

Another characteristic is the very special relationship to “Harold & Maude”, the 1970s cult classic. It has been shown here every Sunday for over 40 years and is inseparably connected to the cinema’s reputation.
