If you want to discover more of Essen in addition to the festival area, you shouldn't miss these highlights:
Whether it's currywurst or Michelin-starred cuisine, electro beats or 90s pop - anything is possible in Essen when it comes to going out. During the day or at night. In addition to Essen's city centre, the hotspot is the trendy district of Rüttenscheid. On Rüttenscheider Straße, affectionately known as "Rü" by the people of Essen, trendy bars, cafés, pubs and clubs are lined up like pearls on a string. Would you rather go shopping? No problem. In the shoe and fashion stores, flagship stores of major brands or exclusive boutiques in both districts, your shopping bags will fill up faster than you can look.
The impressive site of what was once the largest coal mine in Europe is now full to the brim with art, culture and industrial heritage, embedded in wild nature. In addition to the coking plant site where the festival takes place, the Ruhr Museum and the Red Dot Design Museum are definitely worth a visit. While the Ruhr Museum tells the unique history of the region on several levels in the converted coal washing plant, you can experience world-renowned design objects in an unrivalled setting at the Red Dot Design Museum.
It is one of the most important museums for contemporary art in Europe and has a large collection of Impressionist and Expressionist works, including four works by van Gogh alone. And admission is free. The light-flooded new building designed by star architect David Chipperfield is worth a visit in itself.
Deep in the south of Essen lies Essen's leisure oasis and green lung: Lake Baldeney. The 2.7 square kilometre Ruhr reservoir is the top local recreation area for all surfers, rowers, sailors and stand-up paddlers. Or you can circumnavigate the 14.7 km long lake on foot, by bike or inline skates. You like it comfortable? Then why not take a boat trip with the Baldeney White Fleet. The reservoir is even the namesake for its own hiking trail, the BaldeneySteig.
Villa Hügel towers high above Lake Baldeney. Once the residence of the Krupp family of industrialists, the magnificent building is now the venue for numerous concerts and exhibitions and houses a permanent exhibition on the history of the Krupp family. The castle-like villa, which is registered in the land register as a detached house with 269 rooms, is set in 28 hectares of parkland.
Experience an absolute world first that can currently only be seen in Essen: the multi-award-winning mixed reality journey through time "Essen 1887". Using mixed reality goggles and Bluetooth headphones, you can travel back to the year 1887 in Essen city centre, combining reality with virtual elements, accompanied by holograms of well-known actors and celebrities. Thanks to its central location in the heart of the Ruhr region, Essen is easy to reach by car, train and plane. Düsseldorf Airport is only 20 minutes away by car. In addition, over 100 IC, EC and ICE long-distance trains stop at Essen Central Station every day.
To get to the festival site, simply hop on the Kulturlinie 107, which not only takes you directly from Essen Central Station to the festival site in a few minutes (stop "Zollverein" or "Zollverein Nord"), but also takes you to the city's other tourist highlights.
