From the machine noise of the Krupp era to the applause of the theater and the ideas of the young generation: the Colosseum Essen has many faces. With her purely typographic light projection, Sigrid Sandmann brings this history to the façade of the building. Words in standard German and Ruhr dialect, collected in conversations with young people and citizens of Essen, alternate: words, memories, and visions of a digital future. The projections appear like a shift change – abrupt, clear, rhythmic – and make the building itself speak. An accompanying audio installation creates a second perceptual layer: voices from memories and visions of the future weave together into an atmospheric collage that makes transformation audible. “From Layer to Layer” is therefore not only a look into the past, but also a conversation with the future – in light, in sound, and in the words of a city at home in transition.
