The Bonifacius mine in Essen-Kray bears witness to the economic development of Essen around 1900 and, together with the Carl and Zollverein mines, forms a historically complete series of exemplary coal mines that can be used to document the development of mining. The above-ground facilities (pithead baths, turbine hall, wages hall and association hall) were built between 1899 and 1905 and have now been completely renovated so that they can be used for contemporary purposes. The collection of buildings offers numerous leisure facilities and can be visited as part of a guided tour.
