Weekend Trip

Of former coal shafts and great artists

Day 1: Discover the Zollverein UNESCO World Heritage Site

In Essen there is not much left to see of the grey Ruhr area and smoking coal mines. Where once thousands of miners worked, you can find art, culture and design at today's UNESCO World Heritage Zeche Zollverein . But they still exist, the old miners. Honest, straightforward and to the point. Experience the history of the Zollverein colliery with one of these men and let yourself be transported back to a time when there were still sandwiches here and no salmon snacks in the casino. Authentic, humorous, informative and unforgettable, your tour of Zollverein is sure to be a memorable one! Afterwards, we recommend a detour to the Red Dot Design Museum , which holds the world's largest collection of contemporary design for you. Here you will see what the Zollverein colliery is all about today - an innovative and extremely exciting place of change and the future. In the evening you don't need to leave the colliery either. An excellent dinner in a unique ambience awaits you at the Casino Zollverein . And if you're still not ready for the hotel bed afterwards, experience dance, performance art and theatre PACT Zollverein . At the end of this exciting evening, you can relax and take the tram or taxi back to your hotel.

Day 2: Art and culture of the centuries

Your second day in Essen begins with a good breakfast at the hotel. Fortify yourself for an exciting journey through the art history of the centuries. In the Museum Folkwang , exciting special exhibitions await you alongside the free permanent exhibition with works by van Gogh, Monet, Picasso, Cézanne. The world-class museum, which was voted Museum of the Year in 2020, will inspire you. From Museum Folkwang it is only a stone's throw to the trendy district of Rüttenscheid with its popular shopping street ‘Rü’. Here you will find first-class small restaurants, such as the Michelin-starred Schote by TV chef Nelson Müller. Or simply drink a delicious coffee and gather strength for a stroll through individual boutiques and galleries. If the shopping tour was successful, you can dress up for the evening. Essen offers an excellent cultural programme in large and small theatres, the Philharmonie or, for example, the GOP Varieté and Stratmanns Theater . Many organisers have affiliated restaurants so that the evening programme can be combined directly with a good meal. After an unforgettable evening, you can still visit cool bars or rest at the hotel for the journey home.
